Collaborative fire investigation team

The Fire Investigation Team combines nine Portage Fire Department members with two Portage Police Department officers. Together they determine the origin and cause of fires throughout the city. Three fire investigators are assigned to each 24-hour shift, providing round-the-clock coverage and additional on-call support when an incident requires multiple investigators.

Accuracy, evidence and community safety

Team members receive specialized training in arson investigation, evidence collection, scene photography and data analysis. Through detailed interviews, forensic examination and close cooperation with law enforcement, the team produces thorough, fact-based reports that support public safety and the pursuit of justice.

A cooperative effort between the Fire Department and Police Department that consists of 9 members from the Fire Department and 2 members from the Police Department. The teams’ primary objective is to determine the cause and origin of every fire. There are three Fire Investigators assigned to each 24-hour shift that are responsible for handling the fire investigations on their rotation. All Fire Investigators are issued digital pagers and are utilized on all fires when multiple Fire Investigators are needed.

The Portage fire investigation team is experienced in collecting evidence, conducting interviews, and analyzing data to provide an accurate assessment of each case.
